SAI BABA’S SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS

Baba promised his mother that he wouldn’t go far away from his native village, so he agreed that his followers in 1944 build him a residence in the form of a temple (mandir) which is today called the old temple. Baba’s residence Prasanthi Nalayam was opened on 23rd November 1950 on Baba’s 25th birthday. The building, with the help of the donators, began in 1948 and lasten for about two years. The architect of this building was Sai Baba. The main part of Prasanthi Nilayam is the central hall for praying with a podium sheltered from both sides. On one side of the podium is an altar with the portraits of Shirdi Baba and Sri Sathya Sai Baba, in the middle is a silver statue of Shirdi Baba, and under it is a little portrait of Sathya Sai Baba. On the ground floor there were several rooms, but two of them used by Baba for his private conversations, while the other rooms are used for various objects. On the first floor there are Baba’s living rooms. Along the first floor there is a big porch with a marmor statue of Sri Kršna playing the flute. From here Baba gives his blessing (daršan) to his followers who gather around the building, and on the occasion of the lifting of the flag, during some festivals, from here he makes his speech for the present followers. A staircase leads from the first floor to the top of the porch where on the pedestal there is Baba’s bust and opposite it there is a mast for the flag. When the flag is raised Baba gives his blesssing (daršan) to the gathered people here. The first time Baba raised the flag on the mast on 29th September 1962. On the flag there are concentrical circles in the centre of which there is a post which represent the unification with the divine, and several rings which symolize the levels of spiritual discipline which lead to the flowering of Lotus heart, which is symbolized by petals on the top of the post. Here is also a flame which symbolizes the flowering of the heart and the level of the complete dedication to God. In fron of Prasanthi Nilayam there is a beautiful paradise-like garden with numerous trees and fruit trees brought from all parts of India. Because of the bigger and bigger number of pilgrims the residence was developed and broadened all the time. Many guest houses were built for pilgrims with an appropriate comfort as well as Indian and European canteens. There are also shops, bookshops, a post office, and halls for plays, exhibitions and festival rituals. Recently a big hall has been built which can hold 50,000 visitors. For years money from various donators around the world has been coming to Sathya Sai’s central foundation through heritage and inheritance. The administration is done by Baba’s close and trustworthy students, and money is used around the world for Baba’s educational, health and spiritual programme. Baba is often sent cars of different colours from abroad by his followers but before the use he has them painted white.

In November 1957 on a hill above Prasanthi Nilayam a hospital was opened with six beds for sick women and six beds for sick men. The accommodation and treatment of the patients is completely free. The hospital got a complete equipment for surgery and child-bearing women, including x-rays. This position of the hospital was chosen by Baba who said that patients would be in awe when they saw everything that God had created. Baba often, as the greatest doctor, visits the hospital to see the patients, but also to teach the doctors about a lot of things. Due to the divine influence of Baba, in this hospital many incurable diseases have been cured. On the right and on the left from Nilayam there are rooms for followers. As Baba is a great animal friend, a stable was built for a few cows which give milk for patients and followers. For a while he had a horse, deer, does, dogs, peacocks and rabbits.

The administrative building started to be built on 8th October 1981 on the hill north-west from the temple. On the formal opening of the university, Baba held an inspired speech, saying: ‘Today a sprout has been planted, and students are its roots. The sprout will grow into a big tree with branches which will spread around the whole of India, and numerous flowers will grow. My students are my whole treasure and that is why I gave myself to them.’ The administrative building of the university was opened on 22nd November 1982. Then the need for a bigger water well arose. Sai Baba’s social work is the foundation of love, peace, wisdom, truth, goodness and respect to God and people, because today’s system of education and treatment is in discrepancy with Baba’s teaching because it is founded on material demands and has no place for human values such as love, moral, honesty, forgiveness, non-violence, spirituality and serving the others. Chasing money as a life goal makes people greedy and dishonest. It should be said that Sai Baba isn’t against science and technology and making fortune, but everything should be based on honest work with a respect for God and every man.
