SAI BABA’S DIVINE MIRACLES

Because of the bigger and bigger inflow of people to Puttaparthi, during 1944 with the help of many followers, the first Baba’s mandir (residence) was built on the edge of a village which is today called the old temple and represents a historic sight.

Today’s Sai Baba’s residence Prasanthi Nilayam was built with the help of donators, and it was ceremonially opened on 23/11/1950 on his 25th birthday. The main architecht of this building was Baba. During his stay in Prasantha Nalayama Sai Baba gave his blessing to his followers all the time, and he called some of them into his room to talk, where with a swing of his hand he creates for them and presents them with different objects, and he allows some of them to touch his sacred feet.

When Sai Baba wants to cure somebody, he swings his hand and creates a cure in the form of pills, powder or a bottle of syrup or oil and demand that they eat it. The room for talks witnessed many human changes, such as the strengthening of faith, the change of belief, the cure of illness, the rejecting of hatred, respect towards God and man and helping the older and socially challanged people. It was rare that someone got out of Baba’s room with a dry eye, because Baba said to everyone: ‘Why are you afraid when I am here. Come to me with bare hands, I will fill them with gifts and mercy. Lay all your faith in me because I will lead you and protect you.’

Sai Baba composed a lot of holy songs (bhajanas) which he sings with his followers. Occasionally he leads his followers to the sandy beach of the Chitravathi river where he sings holy songs with them and answers to their questions. On one occasion someone asked him what Shirdi Baba had looked like. Baba dived his hand into sand and took out his picture, giving it to one of the followers. Another follower asked about the wiseman Dattatrey, whose medal Baba also took out from the sand, giving it to the follower. Feeling that he should give something to everyone, he dived his hand into sand and took out a big sweet, giving it away to each follower. Then he took a handful of sand which turned into holy powder on a plate (vibhuti), which he also gave to each of the followers.

On one occasion, here on the river bank, a woman asked Baba to cure her husband who was immobile and with swollen stomach he was lying in his room. Baba answered her: ‘Do you think this place is a hospital?’ However, when they came back to Baba’s residence, Baba went to the sick man’s room and performed an operation, creating before that a knife with a swing of a hand. When he got out of the room with bloody hands in which he was holding something like a dirty ball, he asked the lady for a little water to wash his hands, saying: ‘You want me to turn this place into a hospital. Take this cotton wool and put it on his wound.’ When she came to the sick man, his wound had healed completely and the next day he sang bhajanas with others. Some of his ill followers who are far away from him, Baba heals so that he takes their illnesses on himself. For some of his followers Baba materializes watches, rings, bracelets, necklaces, talismans and other objects in order to make a connection with them when they are in trouble and call him for help.

Doctor Padmanabhan from Bangalore was only 23 years old when he came to Sai Baba for the first time, and he told him that he would get married in two months. He met his bride at Sai Baba’s where she had come with her parents a few times, and after two months he got married. In the next years this married couple often contacted Baba who started to take care of them like a father. First he suggested Padmanabhana to open another dental office, but he answered he didn’t have enough money. ‘Don’t worry, a friend will help you’, said Baba. After a short time a friend took over a better dental office in the next town and sold Padmanabhana his office with the equipment on credit. On the opening day Baba came, too, blessing the office. Four years passed by, and the dental office worked perfectly. Baba advised him to go abroad for further improvement. After a short time, at a conference in Bangalore, he met a dentology professor from Vienna who promised to find him a post in Vienna. When he said that to Baba, he told him: ‘Prepare for a journey, because you will be away for a year.’ And really, soon there came an invitation from Vienna, and he found the right man to run his dental office. During the year Padmanabhan acquired great dental experience in Vienna, Munich and London and became one of the leading dentists in India. Years went by, and their business grew better and better. However, after a few years he had problems with the lower back and doctors determined that he had spine tuberculosis. When he said that to Baba, he answered that this wasn’t tuberculosis but pains from too much standing. He also suggested going abroad again because the invitation will come soon. The invitation came soon from England, financially very reasonable for Padmanabhan, who had been working and studying in London and Edinburgh for a few months. Padmanabhan’s son didn’t learn well at the university and his father took him to Baba. Baba materialized him an ink-pen with a swing of his hand, saying: ‘Get down to learning, and at your exams always use this ink-pen.’ Since then the young man always achieved great results at all his exams. Baba again advised Padmanabhan to go to work in America for a short time, where he would enroll his son into a university in Pennsylvania, which later happened. His son also found his bride at Sai Baba’s when and Indian, highly positioned in America, came with his family to Sai Baba.

Mister P. Partasarati, a businessman from Madras, often came to Baba in Puttaparthi where he witnessed many cures. One day he complained to Baba that he was ill with asthma, and he created an apple for him with a swing of his hand, saying: ‘Eat it as a medicine.’ Never again did he have an attack of asthma. On another occasion he brought his blind mother to Baba. Baba put the petals of jasmine on the woman’s eyes and fixed them with a bandage. He repeated it for ten days and the woman regained her eyesight. This event reminds of Jesus who cured blind men with the help of loam and his spittle.

A state clerk C. Mahadevan from Colombo on Sri Lanka completely ignored Sai Baba when his twelve-year-old son showed him Baba’s photographs. Often he saw Baba’s photo in many magazines and when his son and his wife kept persuading him he finally went to Sai Baba with his family to Puttaparthi. Baba created a beautiful locket for his wife with a swing of his hand. Out of great happiness the wife fell in front of Baba’s feet. He picked her up and with his touched cured her ill spine. After a short time Mahadevan got the cancer of the right jaw, with a malignant outgrowth. In more than two months lying in hospital he had three operations of the head, but the pains didn’t stop and the pus was constantly coming out of the wound. At the persuasion of his family he went to Baba and during the blessing (daršan) he complained to Baba that doctors wanted to operate his cancer for the fourth time. Baba materialized a bigger quantity of vibhuti with a swing of his hand, saying: ‘You poor man, eat this.’ Mahadevan ate everything up, and the headaches disappeared, as well as the discharge of pus. At the end of his stay in Puttaparthi, Baba gave him a few little parcels of vibhuti na said: ‘Three times I have fought for your life and finally I cured you here. Svami will always help you with everything. Keep working honestly and living according to God’s commandments and I am always with you.’

Every year three festivals are celebrated in Puttaparthi and these are: dasara (the winning of the good over the evils, mahasivaratri (Šiva’s night dedicated to the destroying of the delusions of mind) and Sai Baba’s birthday on 23rd November. Those days Sai Baba is the happiest because during Dasara he overlooks and blesses the preparing of food for all the participants, walks along two rows of people and chooses the poorest ones who get clothes, and he has a kind word for everyone. During Šiva’s night they sing holy songs (bhajanas) the whole night with Baba’s daršan (blessing), and Baba materilizes in his body a few golden and silver lingas which represent the symbol of respect for Šiva. In Prasantha Nilayama they perform their programme and various artists who are blessed and given various presents by Baba, like rings, necklaces, medals, brooches and other objects which were miraculously created by the swing of a hand.

Mr. V. Radhakrišni, the owner of the factory in Kuppas, came in 1953 to Baba in Puttaparthi with his wife, daughter and his son-in-law. Instead of participating in the religious celebration, he had to lie in bed because of great pains from boil in his stomach. One evening he fell into a coma, so his wife ran to Baba fo advice. Baba visited the patient and said: ‘Don’t worry, everything will be all right.’ However, an hour later the patient’s breathing and beating of the heart stopped and he soon became blue and stiffened. His wife and daughter immediately ran to Baba who just laughed. On the next day they were watching the cold and stiff dead body but they were afraid to go to Baba again because on the first day he told them that everything will be all right. On the morning of the third day the body started to stink and the neighbours from nearby rooms demanded that the body be removed and cremated. When the wife went to Baba again, he answered: ‘Don’t listen to them, I am here and I am soon coming to see him.’ After an hour Baba finally came and told the crying women and everybody else to leave the room. After a few minutes Baba opened the door and called them into the room. The until recently dead Radhakrišni sat on his bed and watched them smiling. Stiffness disappeared and the natural colour was coming back to him. Baba spoke to Radhakrišna, saying: ‘Talk to them, because they are worried.’ Tomorrow Radhakrišni started to recover and after a few days the whole family, with Baba’s permission, came back home. This great Baba’s miracle, the resurrection of a dead man, is completely identical to Jesus’s miracle when he resurrected Lasarus.

Mister Venkatamuni and his wife from Madras have been close followers of Sai Baba for years. In 1953 they set out to travel round the world. When they arrived in Paris by train and wanted to change their cheques, they noticed they had lost them or that they had been stolen. They sent a telegram to Baba with a request for help. Two days later the wife opened her purse and found the lost cheques in it.

Before they built a hospital in Puttaparthi, a follower of Baba fell ill with the appendicitis. As the hospital was ten miles away, the patient’s friends asked Baba to save him. Baba swang his hand and created a scalpel and came into the patient’s room. After a few minutes Baba came out of the room, showing the removed caecum. When his friends came into the room, they found him healthy with a healed wound, and there was only a small scar.

On the holiday of šivaratri in 1955, 18,000 people saw how Baba started to cough, and in his body started to create and go out of the mouth a transparent linga of greenish glow. He raised it high in the air, which induced the tears of happiness in the present people.

On one occasion he created a gold medal with a swing of his hand and showed the present people, telling them that he still had to carve in the name of the receiver. He closed his palm with a medal and opened it again. Everybody became still out of surprise because on the medal there was the name and surname of the famous violin player whose concert was here just finishing. On the medal it was written ‘Vidvan T. Chowdiahu presented by Bhagavan Sri Sthya Sai Baba. ‘

A man who had Kršna’s statue was told by a priest that he should bathe it in ashes to remove the accident which was coming near. A month later he came on pilgrimage to Prasanthi Nilayam where Baba told him: ‘I saw your ritual that you did through the priest. He presented him with linga which he created by a swing of his hand.

Mrs Sakamma carelessly broke he glasses in Puttaparthi and complained to Baba who swang his hand and created a pair of glasses of the same dioptric and gave it to her.

One day Baba took 16 people in two jeeps to the area of the forest reserve along the upper flow of the Chitravathi river. After the lecture everybody ate the food they had brought, and Baba swang his hand and created sweets for the present. After that he swang his hand again and created a package of his photographs in which there were exactly 16 photographs, as many as people.

In 1950 in Puttaparthi the followers from Anantapur came and with them they brought two baskets of freshly picked up tulsi leaves from which they twisted wreaths to decorate the place. When they were finishing the job, Baba went past them and asked them if they wanted two more baskets of tulsi leaves. When they said yes, Baba put his hands on the bottom of each basket and in a moment they were filled up with the tulsi leaves.

The objects which Baba gives away can’t ever be lost. One female follower was given a rosary by Sai Baba. On her way back home somebody stole her the travelling bag with her things so she informed the police about it. After two days the police found the thief and gave her back her travelling bag. In the bag there were all the things except the rosary. She immediately sent a telegram to Baba who answered her: ‘The rosary is with me because no thief can steal it, I will give it back to you when you come to me again.’

Baba materialized and presented a follower with a talisman of protection like he had already got a few years before. The follower was surprised and asked: ‘Why Svami the second talisman of protection?’ Baba replied him immediately: ‘This is the one I gave you the last time. You left it at home in a box which the thieves stole yesterday.’ When the follower came back home he found a demolished door, and the box was gone together with the other golden and silver things.

Sai Baba started to spread his religion throughout the whole of India. Passing through villages his followers’ car he calls farmers and shephards. People leave their fields and run to Baba’s car to see him and receive his blessing or a present in the form of money, fruit or bonbon. He tells them not to run to cities because there they won’t find happiness or pleasure because haughtiness rules there and people don’t have respect for others. At the same time he gives them comfort, courage and faith which they search for, inspires all the hearts to flourish in happiness and delight, and he encourages his followers to sing holy songs (bhajanas). With the help of his followers he visits villages and towns, blesses and cures people and spreads God’s religion.

On the sandy sea beach Kovalam near Trivandrum followed by many followers he sang holy songs and out of the sand he took out a wooden statue of the Kršna God, and then a golden ring. Soon he felt a strong smell of nectar (the drink of immortality) and Baba’s hands bacame sticky. He created a silver bowl in which this sweet and scented drink poured out, which he shared with the present people.

In Cape Comorin he created a rosary with a cross and the image of Jesus with a swing of his hand, and gave it to a catholic priest, and on the sandy coasts of Kanyakumari behind his every step grains of crystal were created of which there were 108 and of which a rosary was made which Baba gave to his follower svami Sadanandi.

One day Baba arrived in Sivanandanagar situated between the green mountains and the Ganga river. Here he held a spiritual lecture and with a swing of his hand materialized a beautiful necklace of 108 wooden grains coated with gold and lined on a golden line which he gave to the organiser of the lecture, Sivanand Sarasvathi. Later, with a group of business people, riding on horses, he visited some places on the peaks of Himalaya where he with a swing of his hand created blessed food or vibhuti for his company. Here he was also followed by many peasants. In one place he took a little snow in his hands and turned it into a pair of golden earrings which he gave to a girl.

Mister Dikšit, a producer of documentaries from Bombay and a famous singer of bhajanas, one day brought his sister to Baba who was in Anantapur. His sister was ill with cancer of one breast and doctors scheduled an operation in a couple of days. Baba told Dikšit: ‘I know your sister has a cancer on the left breast. The operation should have been on Tuesday, but it will be on Thursday. Don’t worry, I will be there and everything will be all right’. Baba created then with a swing of his hand a little vibhuti and gave a part of it to the patient to eat it, and the rest of vibhuti he massaged into Dikšit’s chest. Dikšit drove his sister to the hospital in Bombay where the operation was postoponed for Thursday. On Wednesday evening a liquid suddenly started to flow from his left nostril. As it soon stopped flowing, he was very surprised because he didn’t have a cold. When after two days he came to the hospital, he found astonished doctors who were supposed to perform the operation, because the swelling and the tumor on the sister’s breast were there no more, but only a little water liquid which the doctors took out. Dikšit then realized that his sister was cured through him. His sister’s husband immediately travelled to Baba in Prašanti Nilayam to thank him. As soon as Baba noticed him, he told him with a smile: ‘There is nothing there, just water. You can be happy that your wife is healthy again.’

At a lecture in Horsley Hills Baba often went into nature with his followers towards some rocks. One day he took a piece of rock and said: ‘I will sweeten your tongues a little.’ They were all surprised because the stone turned into a sweet which Baba gave to his followers.

On his journey Baba visited one of his long-year followers Chala Appa Rao from Peddapuram who had been tied to his bed for three years already because he had been suffering from acute anemia because of hemorrhoid bleeding, and the illness had got hold of his kidneys, too. Baba created a linga next to the patient’s bed and advised his household members to bathe linga in water which the patient had to drink every day. The next day the swelling of the patient’s body disappeared, the bleeding stopped, and the digestion and urinating became normal and the patient fully recovered.

On the way to Bangalore the car suddenly stopped because the fuel tank had become empty. Everybody except Baba were surprised how to go on because the petrol station was far away. Baba asked them to bring him a bucket of water from a nearby stream, in which he put his finger and shook it a little, telling them to pour it out in the fuel tank. They continued driving because the car didn’t notice any difference.

At a celebration diesel oil disappeared in the generator which generated electrical current for the lighting during the celebration. As the first petrol station was 20 miles away, Baba asked the present people for a little water in which he put his hand, and there was a miracle; the water turned into diesel oil the generator started working, and the lighting came so the celebration could continue.

In a decorated hall in Madras they were celebrating the birthday of the avatar Kršna. Before the ritual Sai Baba raised both his hands above his head and suddenly there was a beautiful glass bowl in his hands in the form of a bird with spread wings in which there were 43 kinds of sweets.

For the followers of Rajahmundry it was a happy day when Sai Baba came to see them. At twilight about three hundred followers on motor boats set out to the sandy dunes of the river islands formed by the river Godavari. Here they sang holy songs (bhajanas) and asked Baba various questions. Baba told them about a linga which hang in a temple without any support. At the astonishment of the present people Baba answered that linga hang in the air thanks to two magnets which were fastened on the roof and on the floor and attracted linga. ‘If you want to see it I can free it and bring it here. He swang his hand and an egg-shaped iron linga was in his hand. After everybody had touched her, he wrapped it in a tissue and gave it to a young man for safe-keeping. When they returned to Rajahmundry, the young man established that the linga had gone because Baba had returned it into the temple.

The engineer Manohar from Bhadravatri was following Baba with his father to Poona who Baba presented with his mercy because at home holy powder came out of his pictures (vibhuti). At the parting Manohar showed Baba a damaged ring on his hand which Baba had given him earlier. ‘You are probably asking me to repair it, but you are an engineer and you will damage it again.’ He took the ring, blew into it and it disappeared, and in Baba’s hand there was a shiny ring of 22 carats of gold without jewels, but with the engraved letter M.

From the palace Jamnagar Baba took a group of his followers in cars to the sea shore where they walked on the sandy beach, and the waves were spraying them with water drops. Baba sata on the sand and made a heap in the form of a cube with his hands which he then straightened and made three lines with his finger, and on the top he shadowed a circle and a triangle in it. After the words ‘it is finished’, he put his hand under the heap of sand and took out the golden statue of Holy Kršna playing the flute, about 15 inches tall. Before they headed back, Baba asked the car driver which was his favourite divine figure. The driver answered that it was Amba Bhavani. Baba then swang his hand twice and created a golden plate with the engraved figure of Amba Bhavani which he gave to the driver.

It seemed that the sea called Baba bacause he came to the sea shore Balachdi with some of his followers and teachers of the Sainik school where they sang holy songs (bhajanas). Here he took a silver statue of the saint Vinayaka out of the sand for the doctor Gokaka. As Baba was in a good mood, he told the people closest to himself that they might ask for anything from him. Most of them asked for his mercy while some asked for rings or rosaries, and the headmaster of the school Sainik asked for a present for the school. He humoured everybody with a swing of his hand, and he presented the school with a silver statue of the goddess Annapurna who gives away food to her children. ‘Set her up in the dining room and the children will eat gladly, and it will provide food for the body and the soul for the teachers and the students’ – said Baba.

Baba said that he would reveal the rebuilt temple Somanatha. On all the roads many followers welcomed Baba when he was coming there. The member of the committee for the upkeeping of the temple as well as many high clerks of many countries of India welcomed Baba in front of the entrance door of the victory temple. When he entered the temple, many priests were here reciting veda’s hymns. Baba asked for a trey and above it he swang his right hand and 108 silver leaves of bilva and 108 golden flowers fell on the trey. He blessed linga and threw silver leaves and golden flowers over linga. Then he swang his hand and on his palm a ball of shiny light appeared. In himself he was saying the verses in the glory of 12 lingas of light which are situated in the temples around India.

A young follower complained to Baba that because of carelessness he mixed a note of one rupee on which there was the signature of a friend and spent it somewhere shopping. Baba answered him: ‘Don’t worry, the note is now in Bombay.’ He swang his hand and gave the note with the signature to the young follower.

In Venkatagiri there is a sheet of stamps with the picture of statesmen. Baba asked the clerk for a joke: ‘Why do you have such a collection?’ He went over the sheet with his hand and the characters on the stamps changed into the picture of Baba with the writing Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The clerk was very surprised, but Baba returned the stamps into their primary state.

When a student asked Baba’s permission to leave Puttaparthi and go to Madras to take his diploma, Baba told him: ‘I will give it to you here.’ He swang his hand and the diploma from Madras was in his hand.
